Sullivan Excavating started as a regional excavation and demolition contractor in Coal Grove, Ohio. Three decades on, the work spans federal contracts, municipal programs, universities, hospitals and heavy industrial sites — backed by our own hauling and disposal.
Our story
Sullivan Excavating was founded in 1995 as an excavation and demolition contractor working across Lawrence County and the surrounding Tri-State area. The early work was straightforward: clear the site, move the dirt, take the building down.
What changed was the difficulty. Multistory structures. Reinforced concrete. Buildings four feet from occupied apartments. Historic façades that had to survive while everything behind them came down. Nighttime demolition beside a highway with the road closed and traffic rerouted. Deep foundations, unsuitable soils, active utilities, schools in session next door.
Those jobs built the company. Today Sullivan has completed more than 2,000 demolition and remediation projects for federal agencies, cities, counties, land banks, school districts, universities, hospitals, utilities and private developers.
The other thing that changed was control. Waiting on somebody else’s truck or somebody else’s landfill costs schedule, and schedule is what clients actually buy. In 2022 Sullivan added a roll-off container operation. Hilltop Landfill gave the group its own destination for eligible construction and demolition debris. Between the three, most of a project now stays inside the organization.
How it fits together
Sullivan is three separate companies, each with its own equipment, crews and responsibilities. Hire one of them or all three — the difference is that when you hire all three, nobody is waiting on a subcontractor to show up.

Who we work for
Most of Sullivan’s work comes from organizations that have to justify the decision — procurement officers, county engineers, facilities directors and general contractors putting their own schedule at risk.
Send the scope, the site and the schedule. Sullivan will tell you what’s involved and whether we’re the right contractor for it.
